H&M return policy explained
H&M U.S. gives you 30 days to decide. Bring the item to any H&M store in the United States (excluding Puerto Rico) with a valid receipt and tags attached, or register the return in H&M’s online Returns Portal. In-store returns are always free; mail-in returns of online purchases have a flat $5.99 fee deducted from your refund. H&M is blunt about the cutoff: it will not accept returns past 30 days, in stores or online.
Store vs mail returns
- In store: free, receipt and tags required.
- By mail: register in the Returns Portal; package must be postmarked within 30 days of the delivery date; $5.99 is automatically deducted.
If you have several online returns, bringing them to a store saves the fee on each mail return.
Refunds
Refunds go to the original payment method, such as the card used for the order. Shipping and handling costs are not refundable. If you paid with a bank-issued gift card, keep that card until all returns are done — refunds go back to the card used.
Restricted items
H&M links a separate page for returning restricted items (for example hygiene-sensitive categories). We couldn’t verify that list on an official page for this guide, so check with the store or H&M customer service before buying swimwear, underwear, earrings, beauty or similar items you might return.
Holiday 2026
As of November 2, 2026, H&M’s U.S. returns page shows the standard 30 days and no holiday extension (an extended holiday window we saw applies to H&M UK, not the U.S.). Buy early-December gifts with a gift receipt and remind the recipient: 30 days goes fast. If H&M announces a U.S. extension, check with the store and use its date. Compare stores that do extend in holiday deadlines 2026.
How to make the return go smoothly
- Keep tags on until you’re sure — tags attached is a stated requirement.
- Keep the receipt or order confirmation.
- Store return if you can (free); otherwise start in the Returns Portal and get it postmarked in time.
- Photograph the shipping receipt and keep it until the refund posts.
Photograph the receipt the day you buy — thermal paper fades. Save order and shipping emails in one folder, and write the return-by date on the bag or box. If you paid with a card that offers return protection, keep the statement line too.
