Costco return policy explained
Costco is famous for a risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee on membership and on most merchandise. Unlike Amazon’s 30-day or Best Buy’s 15-day clocks, many Costco goods do not carry a short published day count — except a clearly listed set of electronics and major appliances that must come back within 90 days of receipt, plus several non-refundable categories.
Standard return window
On merchandise, Costco states it guarantees satisfaction on every product it sells and will refund the purchase price, with listed exceptions. For everyday warehouse staples outside those exceptions, members commonly return items at the warehouse returns desk without a fixed public “must return by day 30” rule. Costco still notes that limitations apply and that some products use product-specific warranties (for example tires and batteries with limited useful life).
On membership: Costco says it will cancel and refund the membership fee at any time if you are dissatisfied.
Exceptions — electronics, appliances, and non-returnables
Costco will accept returns within 90 days from the date the member received the merchandise for:
- Televisions and projectors
- Major appliances (refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range and under-counter microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers)
- Computers, touchscreen tablets, smart wearable devices
- Cameras, aerial cameras (drones), camcorders, MP3 players
- Cellular phones (return details vary by carrier service contract)
A separate major-appliance article restates the 90-day receipt-based window for the large appliances listed there and notes Costco extends the manufacturer’s warranty on those major appliances to two years, with Costco Technical & Warranty Services available for many products. Costco reserves the right to fulfill second-year warranty obligations via repair, replacement, or refund up to the purchase price.
Other exceptions Costco lists include: diamonds 1.00 ct or larger (paperwork and gemologist inspection process; Jewelry Credit Memo path); cigarettes and alcohol where returns are prohibited by law; special-order kiosk and custom-installed products (generally not returnable except warranty repair/replacement for spec failure); airline and live-performance items; precious metals; Shop Cards; gift cards and tickets; recreational carts ordered online (90 days from receipt — see product page); contact lenses and eyeglasses (department/FAQ-specific processes); freight-delivered items; hearing aids (Hearing Aid center).
Member perks
A Costco membership is required to shop; the return guarantee is a core member benefit. Technical support and warranty assistance for many TVs, computers, cameras, and related products is highlighted in Costco’s help articles, including lifetime free technical support messaging for some categories on the warehouse-returns FAQ. Executive vs Gold Star membership tiers affect shopping benefits more than the base return day counts published on the main return-policy answer — confirm current membership benefits at Costco.
Holiday extensions
As of our Oct 31, 2026 check of Costco’s primary return-policy answer and related FAQs, we did not find a published 2026 holiday return-date extension comparable to Amazon’s or Best Buy’s seasonal calendars. If Costco announces one later, it would appear on Costco Customer Service or in-warehouse signage — verify there rather than assuming a January blanket date.
Receipt rules
Costco’s warehouse-returns FAQ says it helps to have the receipt or original packaging, but it may not be necessary to process a return. Membership and purchase history often allow lookup. For large diamonds, original certificates are required as described above. Accepted payment methods for refunds can differ between warehouse and online — Costco links a payment-methods list; if you return a.com order in-warehouse, confirm which tender can receive the refund.
How to return
Warehouse purchases: Take the product to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse.
Costco.com purchases: Return to any warehouse for an immediate refund path (including shipping/handling when Costco’s online-return article says so), or start a return/replacement in your Costco.com account under Orders & Returns. Online steps: sign in → Orders & Returns → Return or Replace Items → follow prompts for a label or pickup. Costco states you are not charged for return shipping on eligible.com returns, with refunds to the original payment method (limitations apply). Some categories (food, high-end jewelry, floral, paper products, etc.) may need extra processing time. Large freight items have separate handling FAQs.
FAQ
Is there really “no time limit” on most items?
Costco markets a satisfaction guarantee without publishing a short day count for most merchandise, but electronics/appliances have a firm 90-day receipt window, and several categories are non-refundable. Abuse limitations and local law still apply. Ask Member Services if unsure.
Can I return an online TV to the warehouse?
Yes — Costco says online orders can be returned at any warehouse or via Costco.com. TVs fall under the 90-day electronics rule.
What about opened food?
Costco’s satisfaction posture is historically member-friendly on quality issues; use warehouse returns or the.com return flow, and expect perishable/common-sense limits. Confirm with the warehouse if you have an edge case.
Electronics still have a clock
Costco’s guarantee is broad, but TVs, computers, and appliances are on a 90-day timer. ReceiptClock’s $9 one-time tracker will remind you before that window closes.
