Kohl’s return policy explained

Official source Kohl’s Return Policy (FAQ article 893). Kohl’s may verify returns with third parties and can limit or refuse refunds. Confirm on Kohl’s site and your receipt.

Kohl’s is known for relatively long apparel windows and a prominent holiday extension. Standard policy: most merchandise within 90 days (non–Kohl’s Card) or 120 days (Kohl’s Card), with or without a receipt in many cases — plus shorter clocks for premium electronics, watches, mattresses, and Sephora at Kohl’s.

Standard return window

Per Kohl’s FAQ: items purchased with a Kohl’s Card — within 120 days; all other payment types — within 90 days. Kohl’s states it gladly accepts most returns with or without a receipt, subject to verification. The return window start depends on fulfillment:

  • In-store: purchase date
  • Shipped online: ship date
  • BOPUS / BOSS: date the order is ready for pickup

EBT purchases follow the standard window; refunds of EBT-bought items are Kohl’s Merchandise Credit (KMC), not cash back to EBT in the way shoppers sometimes expect — follow the FAQ language.

Exceptions

RuleDetails Kohl’s lists
30 daysPremium electronics and watches (original packaging + valid receipt/account lookup); mattresses; Sephora at Kohl’s (new or gently used + receipt/account lookup)
365 daysBaby registry items with gift or original receipt
Non-refundableBeverages; opened/unsealed breast pumps and accessories; trading cards; blind box items/toys

Note: some older Kohl’s help mirrors still mention Sephora at Kohl’s at 60 days; the holiday/standard FAQ article we checked for Nov 2026 states 30 days for Sephora at Kohl’s outside the holiday extension. If your receipt or store policy board differs, follow that and ask Guest Services.

Holiday extension (2026)

Kohl’s published a 2026 holiday extended return policy:

  • Kohl’s merchandise (including premium electronics, watches, jewelry, mattresses — excluding Sephora): purchases October 4–December 30, 2026 returnable through January 31, 2027.
  • Sephora at Kohl’s: purchases October 30–December 30, 2026 returnable through January 31, 2027.

Purchases before Oct 4 or after Dec 30, 2026 revert to standard windows. Compare across retailers in our holiday deadlines guide.

How to return

  1. In-store at any Kohl’s (fastest) with item + receipt, Rewards account, card used, or app barcode.
  2. Mail when Kohl’s offers that path for your order.
  3. Expect card refunds to show in roughly seven days, subject to your bank.

Sephora beauty bought at Sephora.com or freestanding Sephora stores follows Sephora’s policy — those purchases generally cannot use Kohl’s Sephora shop-in-shop rules interchangeably.

FAQ

No receipt?

Kohl’s often still helps via account lookup, order number, card, or app barcode, but verification can limit or refuse returns.

Amazon returns at Kohl’s?

That is a separate Amazon drop-off program, not Kohl’s own merchandise policy — start in Your Orders on Amazon.

Gift returns?

Gift receipts typically yield merchandise credit based on Kohl’s gift-return pricing rules; ask at the service desk.

How to document your purchase

Snap a photo of the receipt the day you buy — thermal paper fades within months. Save shipping confirmation emails in a folder named “returns 2026.” If you paid with a credit card that includes return protection or extended warranty, keep the statement PDF showing the charge; benefits teams almost always ask for it. Write serial numbers for electronics in the same note as the purchase and delivery dates.

When one holiday list spans several retailers, label each gift with store name and order number on a sticky note under the wrapping. That small step prevents a January scavenger hunt across marketplaces, big-box stores, and specialty shops. If someone else might return the item, include a gift receipt and tell them the deadline in plain language.

Refund timing expectations

In-store refunds to debit or credit often appear as pending within a few days, but banks can take longer to post. Mail returns add carrier transit plus the retailer’s inspection queue — January is the slowest month of the year for both. Check the retailer’s return-status page before you open a bank dispute; fighting a charge while a refund is already processing creates messy double work.

Gift-card or merchandise-credit refunds are common for gifts, missing receipts, or certain online tenders. Ask whether that credit expires. Many large U.S. chains no longer expire store credit, but state rules and banner policies still vary — get the answer in writing on the receipt or email.

When the help page and the store disagree

Shelf tags, register prompts, and handwritten manager notes on a receipt beat any blog summary, including ReceiptClock. If an associate’s explanation conflicts with the corporate help article, ask them to open the current policy page with you or to print what they are using. Escalate once if needed, then decide whether a manufacturer warranty path or a card benefit is smarter than arguing further.

Never invent a defect to slip past a closed change-of-mind window. Retailers share third-party return-authorization networks; suspicious patterns can follow you to unrelated stores. Defective products deserve honest claims with photos, model numbers, and dates. For coverage after a return window closes, see manufacturer warranty basics.

Holiday gifts need a date
