Home Depot return policy explained
Home Depot’s guest-facing return map is layered: most merchandise can come back within 90 days with proof of purchase, but big-ticket and seasonal categories shrink to 30 days, 7 days, or even 48 hours for major appliances. Paying with a Home Depot consumer or commercial credit account stretches many items to 365 days — except those shorter-window exceptions. If you shop tools, paint, plants, and appliances in the same trip, you can easily end up with four different clocks.
Standard return window
Per Home Depot’s official Return Policy page: most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase, unless listed in an exception. Home Depot reserves the right to decline returns when a product has no manufacturing defect but was damaged by the customer, or to prevent fraud or abuse. In-store returns are free even for online purchases; bring a receipt or shipping confirmation, the card used, and valid ID when asked.
Mail returns for eligible online orders start from Order Details or by contacting support (chat, 1-800-430-3376, or text “Support” to 38698). Home Depot says mailed returns typically take about 7 business days to process after receipt, then up to about 10 business days for a bank to post funds.
Exceptions and category windows
| Window | What Home Depot lists |
|---|---|
| 90 days | Most merchandise with proof of purchase |
| 30 days | Furniture; tractors; framing/roofing compressors; consumer electronics (TVs & computers); paint sprayers; listed gas-powered outdoor equipment (trimmers, blowers, chain saws, mowers, augers, tillers, chippers, log splitters). Must be unused and in original factory-sealed packaging. As of July 7, 2026: Halloween and holiday décor also 30 days unused with proof of purchase |
| 7 days | Dehumidifiers; gas pressure washers; window/portable ACs; gas generators (not whole-house/stationary). Unused, factory-sealed. As of July 7, 2026: pumps, portable evaporation, and portable heaters also 7 days |
| 48 hours | Major appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, OTR/built-in microwaves) — contact Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 within 48 hours of delivery excluding weekends; all returns in these categories, including unopened, within 48 hours |
| 365 days | Purchases on Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra / Commercial Revolving Charge, or Commercial Account — except 48-hour / 7-day / 30-day exception lists and other noted exceptions |
Plants: most plants 90 days; perennials, trees, roses, and shrubs have a 1-year guarantee returnable for store credit after the standard window. Cut flowers and floral arrangements are non-returnable. Live goods received damaged/dead online: contact support within 3 days of delivery.
Often non-returnable: gift cards/store credit sales; whole-house/stationary generators; utility trailers; labor/delivery/installation; product samples; tinted paint; many custom/made-to-order products (including custom thresholds as of Aug 3, 2026); Design Center tailored products. Custom window coverings follow a separate “Guarantee to Fit” remake path, not a standard refund.
Special-order returns or cancellations may face a 15% restocking fee and must go back to the same purchase store. Hazardous/fuel equipment generally cannot mail back — return in store.
Member / credit card perks
The main extension is payment-method based: eligible Home Depot credit/commercial accounts get 365 days on items that are not already carved into the 48-hour, 7-day, or 30-day buckets. That is not a blanket year for appliances or sealed electronics — check the exception lists first. Compare with Lowe’s return policy if you shop both warehouses.
Holiday notes (2026)
Home Depot’s page does not describe a single “return until January” holiday blanket like many apparel stores. Instead, as of July 7, 2026, Halloween and holiday décor must be returned within 30 days, unused, with proof of purchase. Do not assume a January gift deadline for décor — confirm your receipt and the live policy page.
Receipt and ID rules
Proof of purchase matters. Non-receipted returns and store-credit returns may require government photo ID and third-party verification. Without valid proof, refunds may be store credit at the lowest advertised price. Design Center purchases return only to Design Center; e-Store Credit orders return in stores.
How to return
- Prefer any Home Depot store with receipt/order lookup for the fastest refund.
- For online mail returns, start in Order Details or contact support for a label; drop at UPS Access Point when directed.
- Major appliances: call 1-800-455-3869 inside the 48-hour window (excluding weekends) before you assume a walk-in return.
- Oversized items: ask Customer Care about home pickup eligibility.
